Newsletter June 2022

Hello medical students, residents and fellows!

Much has happened in the last few months in our world, and AACAP has worked hard to RESPOND quickly. We hope while serving as our communities’ advocates and allies, you are taking time for yourselves.

We also want to celebrate those embarking on new adventures at all career stages: students, residents, fellows, and early career psychiatrists. We have worked hard and should acknowledge our achievements, so let’s take a moment to reflect on our journeys.

For those trying again for these roles, remember that you have already achieved so much and are our constant sources of inspirations. For those in the thick of residency applications, be sure to join our RESIDENCY PROGRAM DIRECTORS PANEL on 7/27! And for CAP fellowship applicants, we’ve got our recent FELLOWSHIP Q&A PEARLS here for you!

During the exciting and anxiety-provoking transitions, the MSR community is here for you. Our PEER MENTORSHIP PROGRAM gives you individualized support based on your needs, and our MONTHLY MEETINGS can be your home where we mentor, coach, sponsor, and most importantly connect with and learn from, YOU. JOIN US 7/11 @ 8pm ET.

We have a packed summer schedule of EVENTS, AWARDS, ANNUAL MEETING PREPS, and PROJECT OPPORTUNITIES with seasoned child and adolescent psychiatrists! There is much to digest, so be sure to review our June MEETING MINUTES and join us in July!

Let us know if there’s anything you don’t see that we should think about implementing as well - we’re here to serve and are always open to new ideas!

With gratitude,
Alissa and Cindy

And thank you to ALL trainees for representing our voices and advocating for our children and families at the 2022 AACAP Legislative Conference! Below are some reflections, and please share more with us via email.

I am a first year Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellow at UC Davis and I attended the AACAP Legislative conference this year… Below are some of my reflections: I had a great experience attending the AACAP Legislative Conference this year! This was my first time attending. I was nervous at first but as the day went on, I became more comfortable using my voice to advocate. As an added bonus, my very good friend, Dr. Jacob Lee, was also in my group! Another coincidence was that our group leader, Dr. Robert Holloway, was also a graduate of UMKC, the same medical school that Dr. Lee and I attended. This was a wonderful experience and I feel much more confident in speaking with legislators and advocating in the future.

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinical Fellow
University of California Davis

As a medical student just finishing my first year, I was at first a bit weary of participating in an event with everyone from students to practicing physicians; however, I am so glad I made the decision to attend. After Leg Con, I feel much more prepared to use my voice to advocate with and for people experiencing mental illnesses as well as for the practitioners treating the ever-growing psychiatric needs of the United States. Being able to simultaneously learn from everyone in my legislator meetings as well as practice my own communication and education skills was such an unexpectedly empowering experience. I appreciate the patience and help from the practicing physicians and residents who helped me learn to practice advocacy in this exciting day of community and empowerment.

I'm really appreciative to AACAP for making this event possible. This event put me in 1-on-1 contact with both of my states Senators. Hawai‘i faces unique advocacy challenges, so the region-specific approach was a great fit.
