Newsletter January 2023
Happy New Year medical students, residents, and fellows!

It was so refreshing to see some of you at the AACAP annual meeting in October, and my how time flies with us already weeks into the new year! A huge thank you to all of the speakers and presenters for the enriching lectures and workshops in Toronto, including those by some of our very own MSR members. One of the best parts of the annual meeting is the handful of new connections that are formed, both within and outside of MSR. It already feels like it happened long ago, and we are looking forward to next year in NYC!

We hope everyone had a happy, safe, and joy-filled holiday season and a great start to the new year! It is our wish that folks were able to step away from school/work to spend meaningful time with family and friends, and we thank everyone who worked through the holidays caring for our patients who need it most. We are looking forward to all that 2023 has in store for AACAP MSR!

Happy Match to all those who matched into child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship this month! We are so excited to watch everyone grow into the clinicians and leaders who will care for the young generation of children who need our help. For those applying to general psychiatry residency, as you decide on your rank lists, we wanted to remind you of the 2022 Virtual Psychiatry Residency Application Panel, which can be viewed HERE. We are sending well wishes for the Match in March as well! For anyone curious about the fellowship match process, it's not too far away until application season begins again - you can view last year's MSR CAP Fellowship Q&A session notes HERE. If there is any way we can support you through the MSR team, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Cheers to a new year!

BELONGING IN ADVOCACY:

GROWING OUR MSR ADVOCACY TEAM:
Amid a national health crisis, your efforts as trainees are critical in caring for children and families. As frontliners, your voices are the loudest and most powerful. In a bid to support and develop trainee advocacy initiatives, the MSR Committee is calling for your thoughts, questions and stories on advocacy:
What are the critical issues in children's mental health that resonate with you the most today? What cause would you like to advocate for?
Tell us about your experiences participating in advocacy events? Have you attended AACAP Leg Con? How about other local events?

Email your thoughts to aacapmsr@gmail.com!

CALL FOR PAPERS:

AACAP News Spring Issue: Honor Your Mentor Submissions [Deadline: February 20, 2023]
Each year, the Spring issue of AACAP’s news magazine is mentorship focused and AACAP members are invited to share their appreciation for special mentors in their lives. If you wish to share a public acknowledgement in the upcoming 2022 issue, see the guidelines below:

Honor your mentor in the March/April issue of AACAP News! Whether you’re a medical student, resident, active researcher, or practitioner, or retired—someone made a significant impact on your career. We’re asking all of you to take the time to honor your mentor and tell others why they were important to you, and how they influenced your life. In 100 words or less, tell us who served as your mentor. Email submissions to communications@aacap.org before February 2023 (likely February 15th if based on the 2022 deadline). The submission should include your name, affiliation (if appropriate), the name of your mentor(s), and a short testimonial or anecdote. Photos are encouraged as well.

JAACAP Call for Cover Artwork [Deadline: ongoing]

JAACAP seeks interesting images and original artwork by children and youth, including but not limited to those who have personally struggled with mental health challenges.

Submissions in which the artist reflects upon their identity, family, and/or community are particularly encouraged. If you work with an art therapy program or have artwork from children or grandchildren hanging on the fridge, encourage the artist and/or guardian to consider submitting to  JAACAP! For papers and artwork, questions and pre-submission inquiries should be directed to support@jaacap.org or connect@jaacap.org.
